BEFORE your class critique...
Trying to remember everything that goes into a successful design project critique can be overwhelming. Here is a checklist that can help you before you begin:
3 THINGS TO DO BEFORE CRITIQUING:
1- Explain the Principles of Design and list them on the board or in another visible place. For most projects these 6 are useful: Balance, Contrast, Movement, Pattern, Rhythm, and Unity. See explanations HERE.
1- Have students explain the process of creating their designs, as if to someone who was not there during the activity. List materials and step-by-step instructions on the board.
3- Give a speech to the students about being appropriate during the design discussion. Inform them that critiques should not be judgemental, negative, or prescriptive. Critiques should be inquiring, building trust and guided by the teacher.
