TRY THIS for Design Students

Here are some things you can try as an design student to make for an interesting critique.

5 THINGS DESIGN STUDENTS CAN TRY:

1- Students can critique the designs of another class using the "praise and polish" technique.  They can leave a post-it note w/ their initials on each design.  The designers benefits from critics who do not know the assignment.

2- Students can critique their own designs to a younger class, using very simple language that a younger sibling or neighbor would understand.

3- Students can divide large groups of designs into sub-categories, this can promote careful looking and noticing of subtleties.  How are they alike?  Different?  Which belong together and why?

4- Students can interview others from different grades about their designs.  They should ask, "What has influenced the designer, and what direction might they take in the future?"

5- Students can examine a design as historians would, while pretending to be scientists from far in the future.  Ask them to look for influences of culture on the designer, and to explain any references.
